Kelling Heath Wildlife

A new grant from 2002-2012 concentrated on keeping the cleared areas open, using a flail collector and forage harvester. Herbicide control of bracken and young birch has continued using a weed wiper. Since about 2000, similar work has been carried out in the Salthouse parish portion of the heath, such as Telegraph Hill.

Small areas of bare soil have also been created mechanically, to encourage invertebrates, rare heathland plants and ground nesting birds. Clear ground has also been created by occasional fires, mostly near the railway. The cleared areas and recent fire sites are shown on the Map 2.
